Tokyo Steel Manufacturing, a major electric furnace steelmaker, is building a new plant at Tahara in
Aichi Prefecture, with operation scheduled to start in 2009. The plant will supply steel sheet to Toyota and other automotive manufacturers. This is the first time 14 years that new steelmaking facilities have been built in Japan. The move comes amid a dramatic general recovery in profitability at the nation's steelmakers, on rising market prices worldwide.
