The advertisement industry organizations
Japan Advertising Agencies Association (JAAA)

Created in 1950 with the aim of bringing advertising companies together, stimulating the creation of new ads, and fostering quality advertising. Consists of 162 member companies that account for approximately 80% of Japan’s total advertising expenditure.

Largest advertising company in Japan with about 25% market share. Based on revenue, in calendar year 2003 Dentsu Group was fifth in the world’s advertising communication industry. Strong in four mass media.
Hakuhodo Dy Holdings    
Japan’s first integrated media holding company. Created in October 2003 through integration of business operation of Hakuhodo, Daiko and Yomiko Advertising.
Japan’s second largest advertising agency and ranks 9th globally. Began business as an industry pioneer in 1895 buying media space for placement of advertisement. Putting the highest priority on brand building.
Created in January 1999 through merger between Asatsu and Dai-Ichi Kikaku. Ranks 3rd in industry. Has business alliance and equity-stake cross holding with WPP Group of Great Britain.
Daiko Advertising
Ranks 4th in industry and 19th in the world. Has entered into a business partnership with The Interpublic Group of Companies, the world’s number one advertising group.
Tokyu Agency
Established in 1961, and ranks 5th in industry. A member of Tokyu Group, core of which is Tokyu Corporation, a railroad company. Signed business cooperation agreement with DDB Worldwide Communication Group.
Yomiko Advertising
Ranks 6th in industry. Has marketing edge in “Home” segment of residential real estate segment and has strength in animation programs and topical events. Started as a sole agent for Yomiuri Shimbun.
The competent authorities
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
One of the central government offices in Japan. Newly created in January 2001 as the successor of the abolished Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Aims at strengthening private economy, smooth development of external economic relation and to secure the steady supply of mineral and energy resources.
Intellectual Property Strategic Headquarters at Prime Minister’s Office
Founded in March 2003 with the aim of enhancing the policies regarding intellectual properties. It deals with policies that are related to create secure and make use of intellectual properties.
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC)
Responsible for creating the fundamental national system of Japan. These systems include the national administrative organizations, public service personnel system, information and communications postal services, and statistical systems.
Japan Advertisers Association (JAA)
Established in 1957 with the aim of improving the quality and efficiency of advertisers’ activity and contributing to the healthy development of the nation’s economy. Has a membership of about 300 advertiser firms.
