Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Mar. 1 ordered to reduce the number of channels operated by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK. “NHK has too many channels. If it is to place more emphasis on transmitting information overseas, it has to scale down the existing channels,” Koizumi said in a meeting with Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Heizo Takenaka, while reforms on NHK are under way.
The prime minister has requested NHK to expand its international broadcasting. The broadcaster is now operating 8 broadcasting channels, including terrestrial television channels.
