Toshiba’s Licenses DNA Chip Patent to U.S. Firm

3, 10. 2006

Toshiba Corp. has licensed its patents on DNA chip technologies to U.S. bio-related company Antara BioSciences Inc., Toshiba announced on Mar. 10.

DNA chips are used to examine DNA molecules immobilized on it. The chips find out whether the target DNA exists in the test portion.

The testing is based on electrochemical detection method, a core technology for genetic testing. The method, included in the license, makes testing devices simpler than currently available ones, as it does not require large-scale optical devices. As a result, the chips are expected to reduce the testing cost.

The licensing agreement is “the first step to make genetic testing prevail in the U.S.A.,” Toshiba said.
