Japan and U.S. government officials began two-day technical meeting on the lifting of Japan’s ban on U.S. beef imports on May 17 in Tokyo.
In response to the talks, Japan’s newspaper Sankei Shimbun carried a exclusive cover story saying Japanese government has already made its mind to permit the imports again. Kyodo News Agency also reported that the market is likely to reopen as early as June.
The talks are participated by division director level officials from Japan’s 3 ministries including Foreign Ministry, Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry. Japan’s counterpart for the meeting is headed by Acting U.S. Agriculture Undersecretary Chuck Lambert.
