Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and NEC Corp. began talks to form an alliance in the mobile phone device business, NEC said on May 29.
Both companies are facing budget deficits in the mobile phone business, despite their rank as second and third in the number of domestic shipments. They are planning to reduce costs by cooperating in development, manufacturing and material procurement. Their brand names will remain unintegrated.
