Japan's population to become "by far the world's oldest": U.N. survey

   The population in Japan is expected to be "by far the world's oldest" in 2050, the United Nations pointed out in its study on world's aging population, "World Economic and Social Survey 2007", announced on June 16, 2007. The survey said the proportion of the population aged 60 years or over in the United States is projected to rise from 17% in 2005 to 26% in 2050. In Japan, the corresponding percentage is expected to increase from 26% in 2005 to 42% in 2050, it said.
