Equity investments in BRICs total 2,127 billion yen at end of 06

8, 02. 2007

Japanese equity investments in BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are expanding, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported on its July 17, 2007 issue. According to the report of the Bank of Japan on international investment position of Japan at the end of 2006, stock investments in BRICs, including investment trusts, had totalled 2,127 billion yen as of the end of 2006, an increase of 1,210 billion yen from a year earlier. The balance of the investments was 479 billion yen at the end of 2004 and 917 billion yen at the end of 2005. These figures thus show that the investments were nearly doubling every year. The rise reflected increased sales of investment trusts incorporating emerging stocks in Asia particularly to individual investors. The balance of investments in BRICs exceeded that in Germany (1,891 billion yen) and followed those in the United States, Britain, South and Central America, France and Asia (excluding China and India).
