Population in Japan's 3 major urban regions account for more than half of the country's total population

8, 14. 2007

The population in Japan's three major urban regions of Tokyo, Nagoya and Kansai accounted for more than half of the country's total population for the first time, according to a survey on population as of the end of March 2007 announced by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry on August 2, 2007. The Tokyo regions covers the Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, while the Nagoya region is made up of the Aichi, Gifu and Mie prefectures. The Kansai region includes the Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Nara prefectures. The total population was 127,053,471, representing a decrease of 1,554 from a year earlier. This marked a population decline for the second consecutive year. The population in Sendai City, however, exceeded the 1 million mark. This meant there were 11 cities with the population of more than 1 million in Japan.
