Nissan Motor Co. announced on Aug. 6, 2007 that it will start selling X-Trail SUV cars powered by "clean diesel" engines that emit harmful exhaust substances as low as gasoline engines for the first time on the Japanese market in the autumn of 2008. Nissan will be the first Japanese carmaker to sell clean diesel cars on the home market. To prevent further global warming, diesel cars that give better mileage and emit less carbon dioxide compared with gasoline engine cars are regarded as the promising eco-cars along with hybrid cars that run on gasoline and electric motor. Clean diesel cars are already widely used in Europe.
