Department store sales in Japan decrease 4.3% in July on year

9, 06. 2007

The sales of department stores throughout Japan in July totalled 722,700 million yen, a decrease of 4.3% from the corresponding month of the previous year, the Japan Department Stores Association announced on Aug. 17, 2007. It was the first decline in the sales on year in two months. The sales decrease was attributed in part to the fact that the rainy season lasted longer this year than usual.
The major earthquake that shook Niigata Prefecture also adversely affected the consumption. Most of the department stores advanced their summer-time "clearance sales" to June this year, pushing up the sales in that month. And this also caused a reactionary sales decline in July.
