The rate for making a call by mobile phone in Tokyo is about three times as expensive as that in New York, according to a survey on differences in prices for electric communications services in Japan and abroad (conducted in fiscal 2006) announced by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry on Aug. 28, 2007. The survey showed that the fee for a call in Tokyo was 39.4 yen per minute against 11.7 yen in New York. (The fee in New York was doubled as calls received are also charged in New York.) The corresponding price in Seoul was 19.2 yen. Cities where the rates are higher than Tokyo were London at 48.2 yen and Paris at 40.9 yen. The survey was conducted on the basis of call rates charged by main mobile phone companies in seven cities in the world.
