Omron Corp. has developed a technique to measure how deeply a person is smiling. By analysing the muscular movements on more than 30 spots on the face, the "degree of smile" is determined somewhere between 0% and 100%. The determining factors are such facial changes as the drooping of the eye corners or lifting of the corner of the mouth. The technique might be used to take a picture of a person just at a right moment when his/her smile is at the highest degree. Omron analysed the facial movements of about 4,000 Japanese and non-Japanese persons to establish some patterns they have in common in their facial expressions. The technique has made it possible to analyse the facial expression of persons in a moment regardless of their sex, nationality or age, the company said.
