Economic Watcher Survey for September shows decline in economic sentiment index for the sixth consecutive month

The index to show the general sentiment on the current business condition in Japan for September dropped 1.2 points from the previous month to 42.9, according to the "Economic Watcher Survey" announced by the Cabinet Office of the government on Oct. 9, 2007. The index related to the activities of business firms rose 0.4 point to 43.5, while that related to employment went up 0.5 point to 48.8. The index related to the household expenses, however, dropped 2.0 points to 41.7. As a result, the index to assess the overall economic sentiment represented a fall for the sixth consecutive month. Regionally, the indexes for the business sentiment in the Okinawa, Hokuriku, Kinki and Shikoku regions showed rises. Those for the seven regions throughout Japan, including Hokkaido, Tohoku and Kyushu, went down.
