Audi V12TDI Engine
Audi AG revealed at Detroit Motor Show on Jan. 13, 2008 the V12TDI Engine, the high-performance sports car powered for the first time in the world by a 12-cylinder diesel engine.
The engine will be put on the concept car made on the basis of the R8. With the displacement of 5,934 cc, it produces 500 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque. The engine gives the car the speed of up to 300 km/h. With the 0-100 km/h acceleration of only 4.2 seconds, the car would be good enough to be called a super-sports car.
It is said the engine is similar to the one that powered the R10, the Audi racing car that won the championship in the Le Mans 24-hour race for the first time as a diesel engine car. It won again in the following year. The engine is so designed it is only 166 mm longer than the conventional V8TDI so that it can be put on the R8 midship.
Its environmental performance ought to be given a special notice. Beside the oxidation catalyser and device to remove particles, the nitrogen oxide is made harmless by spraying urea solution to the exhaust system. It thus clears the Euro 6 auto exhaust gas control that is to be introduced by the EU in 2014, before the control is imposed by the government.
