"Device to measure laughs" that can detect sincere or fake smiles has been developed by a Kansai University research team. The device was publicly demonstrated by Prof. Yoji Kimura, 60, and other members of the team on Feb. 20, 2008. It measures the depth or sincerity of laughs by digitalizing the movements of the diaphragm by using "aH" as the unit. A comedy group formed by students of the university, "Real Kids," helped conduct the demonstration by trying to make a 5-year-old girl and three other peopled in their 30's laugh.
