All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced on March 27, 2008 that it will buy 25 "MRJ" jetliners being developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The MRJ (Mitsubishi Regional Jet) will be the first jetliner to be developed in Japan. With the order to be placed by ANA, Mitsubishi will start the production of the MRJ. It will be the second domestically manufactured passenger plane since the propeller-driven YS11 was made about 40 years ago.
ANA is said to have appreciated the fuel efficiency, low noise and low carbon dioxide emission of the jetliner. The airline company plans to start flying the 86- to 96-seat MRJ90 planes from 2013 for domestic flights to connect local cities.
