The American social networking service (SNS) Facebook launched a Japanese-language service on May 19, 2008. The company first started an SNS targeted at students in 2004, and its business quickly spread over the entire United States. The number of its users is said to range from 50 million to 60 million. It holds the second largest marketed share in the world following the U.S. MySpace, which advanced into Japan in the fall of 2006.
In Japan, mixi remains to be the largest SNS company with its membership reaching about 14.01 million as of the end of March.
