Painter Ikuo Hirayama Dies of Stroke

   Traditional-style Japanese painter Ikuo Hirayama died of a stroke at a hospital in Tokyo on December 2, 2009. He was at 79 years old. He was widely known for his works themed in the Silk Road.

   Born in Hiroshima, Hirayama graduated from Tokyo Fine Arts School, which is today's Tokyo University of the Arts. In addition to the Silk Road-themed works, he is known as works of Buddhism and other cultural heritages. He received the Order of Culture in 1998. He served as the president of Tokyo University of the Arts, and the chairperson of the board of Japan Art Institute,
